Create Your FSA ID — Do This Before Anything Else
Your FSA ID is your username and password for the Federal Student Aid website. You need it to sign and submit the FAFSA electronically. It can take 1–3 business days to verify — so create it now, before the FAFSA opens.

Key Deadlines
For 2024–25 academic year. New FAFSA opens Oct 1 each year for the following year.
For 2025–26 academic year. File as early as possible — many aid programs are first-come, first-served.
California's state grant deadline is earlier than the federal deadline. Missing this date means losing Cal Grant eligibility.
For AB 540 eligible students (undocumented, DACA, T/U visa holders). Apply at dream.csac.ca.gov instead of FAFSA.
Many colleges award institutional grants on a first-come basis. Check each school's financial aid page for their specific priority deadline.
Your FSA ID can take 1–3 days to verify. Create it at studentaid.gov/fsa-id before the FAFSA opens.
