A Career Built in Service
I started my career as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army in the 1990s — ten years of enlisted service that taught me everything about discipline, teamwork, and caring for people under the most demanding conditions imaginable. When I transitioned to the U.S. Air Force as a commissioned nurse officer, I brought those lessons with me.
For 15 years, I served as a flight nurse — caring for critically ill and injured patients at altitude, often in combat or austere environments. I rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Along the way, I earned my BSN and built a clinical foundation that few nurses ever get to experience.
In 2003, I joined California state government as a Registered Nurse. Over the next 23 years, I worked my way from staff RN to senior nursing leadership — managing clinical teams, navigating institutional healthcare, and mentoring dozens of nurses through the unique challenges of public-sector medicine.
When I retire in July 2026, I will have served for 48+ years across the U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force, and the State of California. And I will have accumulated more career intelligence — about nursing pathways, civil service ladders, pension systems, loan repayment programs, and financial planning — than any single resource I have ever found online.
"Wealth does not always come from investing brilliance. Sometimes it comes from persistence inside institutions that reward time and service."
Civic Mandate is my way of making sure that knowledge does not retire with me.
The Mission Phase of Life
Retirement is not the end of work. It is the beginning of a different kind of work — work focused on legacy, ideas, and helping others rather than salary, promotion, or institutional goals.
Many people who retire in their late 50s enter what psychologists call a mission phase — when work becomes about meaning instead of advancement. After decades of structured employment, the focus shifts toward reflection, contribution, mentoring, and leaving something behind.
Building Civic Mandate fits naturally into that stage. So does writing two books. So does sharing 48 years of hard-won career intelligence with people who are still in the middle of their own journeys.
