Tips for Maximizing Your Benefits

Start with FAFSA
All federal aid, grants, and work-study require an annual FAFSA. File as early as possible at studentaid.gov.
Track PSLF from Day 1
Submit Employment Certification Forms annually — do not wait until you've made 120 payments.
Check your state's health dept
State LRPs often have short application windows and limited slots.
Ask your employer
Many hospitals offer tuition reimbursement or student loan assistance that isn't publicly advertised.
Consider community colleges first
Completing prerequisites at community college can save tens of thousands before transferring.
Look for stackable credentials
Earn certificates and associate degrees that count toward bachelor's degrees.
Watch for tax implications
Forgiven amounts under IDR plans may be taxable after 2025 — consult a tax advisor.
Beware of scams
Legitimate loan forgiveness programs never charge fees or ask for your FSA ID password.

Key Tips for Employer Education Programs

Always ask HR explicitly
Many large employers have education benefits that are not well-publicized. Ask: 'Do you offer tuition reimbursement? Student loan repayment? Certification cost coverage?'
Certifications & CEUs covered separately
Many employers cover professional certifications (BLS, ACLS, specialty boards) and CEUs for licensure renewal — a separate benefit from tuition programs
Check your union contract (CBA)
If your workplace is unionized, your CBA may include negotiated education benefits beyond what the employer offers to non-union staff
Work commitment terms matter
Most programs require 1–3 years of continued employment after completing funded education. Leaving early typically triggers repayment of funds
IRS Section 127 tax-free limit
Up to $5,250/year in employer education assistance is federal income tax-free. Amounts above this threshold are typically taxable
Stack employer benefits with federal programs
PSLF, Nurse Corps LRP, NHSC, and state LRPs can often be combined with employer tuition benefits — verify stacking rules with each program office
