School nursing is one of the most overlooked career paths in California public sector healthcare. School nurses work a 10-month schedule, earn competitive salaries, receive comprehensive benefits, and — in most California school districts — participate in CalSTRS, the California State Teachers' Retirement System.
The CalSTRS Advantage
CalSTRS is a defined benefit pension system similar to CalPERS. The benefit formula for school nurses is typically 2% per year of service at age 60, or 2.4% per year of service at age 63. A school nurse with 30 years of service retiring at 63 would receive 72% of their final compensation as a monthly pension for life. CalSTRS and CalPERS are reciprocal systems — service credit earned in one can count toward vesting in the other.
Salary and Benefits
School nurse salaries in California range from approximately $70,000 to $110,000 annually, depending on the district and years of experience. Large urban districts — Los Angeles Unified, San Francisco Unified, San Diego Unified — pay at the higher end of this range.
Certification Requirements
California school nurses must hold a valid RN license and a School Nurse Services Credential issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC). The credential requires a bachelor's degree, an RN license, and completion of an approved school nurse preparation program.
How to Get Hired
School district nursing jobs are posted on EdJoin (edjoin.org), the primary job board for California K-12 education employment.
