I did not build my retirement income by picking stocks or timing the market. I built it by staying inside institutions that reward time and service — and by stacking them on top of each other.
The Three Sources
My retirement income comes from three sources: a military pension, a CalPERS pension, and Social Security. Each of these is a defined benefit — a guaranteed monthly payment that continues for the rest of my life, regardless of market conditions. The military pension required 20 years of active duty service. The CalPERS pension required 23 years of state service. Social Security required 35 years of covered earnings. I had all three.
Why Defined Benefits Beat Defined Contributions for Most People
The 401(k) and its variants are defined contribution plans. When the balance is gone, it is gone. A defined benefit pension pays a fixed amount every month for the rest of your life. The longevity risk — the risk of outliving your money — is borne by the institution, not by you.
The Stacking Strategy
The most powerful thing you can do with public sector employment is stack multiple defined benefit sources. Military pension plus CalPERS plus Social Security is one example. The stacking strategy requires patience. It requires staying in institutions long enough to vest and earn meaningful benefits. It is not exciting. But it works.
