PSLF has forgiven billions of dollars in federal student loan debt. It has also denied tens of thousands of applications. The difference between approval and denial almost always comes down to one thing: paperwork done early, correctly, and consistently.
The Most Expensive Mistake
The most expensive PSLF mistake is not submitting the Employment Certification Form annually. Without annual certification, you will not know whether your employer qualifies, whether your loans qualify, or whether your payments are counting — until year 10, when it is too late to fix problems that could have been corrected in year 2. Submit the PSLF Form every year, every time you change employers, and every time your employment status changes.
Loan Type Matters
Only Direct Loans qualify for PSLF. FFEL loans, Perkins loans, and other non-Direct federal loans do not qualify unless consolidated into a Direct Consolidation Loan. If you have non-Direct loans, consolidate them — but understand that consolidation resets your payment count to zero for the consolidated loan.
Repayment Plan Matters
PSLF requires payments made under an income-driven repayment plan or the standard 10-year repayment plan. Payments made under graduated repayment, extended repayment, or other non-qualifying plans do not count.
