The base salary comparison between CDCR nursing and county hospital nursing is close. The total compensation comparison is not.
Base Pay Comparison
CDCR Registered Nurse CF (entry level) starts at approximately $9,400 per month ($112,800 annually) under the current BU17 contract. Senior Registered Nurse II (supervisory) earns approximately $11,200 per month ($134,400 annually). Los Angeles County RN I starts at approximately $8,800 per month ($105,600 annually). San Francisco DPH RN starts at approximately $10,200 per month ($122,400 annually).
Overtime and Differential Pay
CDCR nursing positions are eligible for overtime at 1.5x after 8 hours per day or 40 hours per week. Mandatory overtime is common in many facilities. Nurses who work mandatory overtime regularly can earn $140,000 to $160,000 annually in base plus overtime.
The Verdict
On base salary alone, CDCR and major county hospitals are comparable. On total compensation — including pension value, PSLF eligibility, overtime availability, and job security — CDCR has a meaningful advantage for nurses who are willing to work in a correctional setting.
