I enlisted in the Army as a private. I retired from the Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel. The path between those two points was not straight, and it was not easy, but it was possible — and it is a path that more people should know about.
The Enlisted-to-Officer Transition
The transition from enlisted service to commissioned officer requires a bachelor's degree and a commission. For healthcare professionals, there is a direct commissioning program: if you have a nursing degree and an active RN license, you can apply for a direct commission as a Nurse Corps officer without going through OCS. I earned my ADN while on active duty, transitioned to the Nurse Corps as a Second Lieutenant, and completed my BSN through a military-funded program. The Army paid for my education. I paid with my time and service.
The Air Force Nurse Corps
The Air Force Nurse Corps offers a range of specialties — critical care, flight nursing, perioperative, psychiatric, and others. Flight nursing was my specialty. It requires additional training and certification, and it takes you to assignments that are unlike anything in civilian healthcare.
The Financial Case for Military Nursing
Military nursing offers base pay, housing allowance, subsistence allowance, and comprehensive healthcare — all tax-advantaged. The military pension at 20 years is 50% of base pay, paid monthly for life. For nurses who serve 20 years, the pension alone is worth $1 million to $2 million in present value terms.
